Edat sorularında, cloze içinde ve çeviride.

depend on, result in, result from, consist of, account for, contribute to, comply with, refer to, object to, cope with, rely on. Bu kalıpların çoğu Türkçedeki karşılığından türetilemez; ezberlenip tanınır.

Olumsuz cümlede tek seferlik bir eylem de until alır ve “… -den önce değil” anlamı verir: The results will not be published until May.

• Students who wish to change their course must inform the faculty office ————boşlukby the end of the second week at the latest.

Anlamca yakın bazı kalıplar ise edat değil to V1 alır: able to do ama capable of doing; manage to do ama succeed in doing. Edattan sonra -ing kuralının ayrıntısı ve to'nun edat olduğu kalıplar “Gerund mi, infinitive mi” konusundadır.

Bazı sözcükler birden çok edatla kullanılır ve anlamı edat belirler. differ from karşılaştırılan ikinci şeyi, differ in farkın hangi özellikte olduğunu verir; agree with bir kişiye ya da görüşe katılmayı, agree on bir konuda uzlaşmayı, agree to bir öneriyi kabul etmeyi anlatır. Artış ve azalış isimlerinde in neyin değiştiğini, of değişimin miktarını gösterir: an increase of 5 percent in prices.
